CMS Announces Reversal of Independent Pharmacist Regulations for SNFs

October’s controversial proposal by CMS that required nursing homes to hire independent pharmacists to oversee residents’ medication plan regimens, was reversed by Federal regulators Monday. Officials from CMS announced that the regulation would be “highly disruptive to the industry.” Although CMS Deputy Director Jonathan Blum said that the agency is concerned about the inappropriate medicating of residents, the problem is not limited to pharmacists, but also extends to physicians and other nursing home staff.

As it stands, Federal laws require that SNFs review resident drug regimens once per month. Frequently, however, this task is outsourced to the companies that already supply these same facilities with medications, raising concern about possible conflicts of interest.
