The Boston Globe reported it found overuse of antipsychotic drugs in Massachusetts nursing home patients. By analyzing data from CMS, the Globe counted 2,483 patients who were administered the drugs for off-label uses. The drugs, such as Risperdal and Seroquel, are not indicated for use by dementia patients absent extreme agitation and sleeplessness. The Massachusetts state legislature is considering a bill that would require nursing homes to obtain written permission from a patient’s health care proxy and a court appointed guardian before using antipsychotic medications.
